Ensuring Guest Safety: Addressing Allergies at Luau, Hale Aloha

IMG_7627.jpeg

While working as a server at the Luau, Hale Aloha at PCC, one of my responsibilities was to ensure guests with food allergies could dine safely. We typically streamline this process by providing a QR code linking to detailed allergy information. However, I encountered a guest with Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS), a rare and potentially life-threatening allergy to red meat. AGS was unfamiliar to me, and despite the guest's initial explanation, I realized I needed additional information to ensure their safety.

Recognizing the importance of accurate and adaptive problem-solving, I immediately sought help. First, I consulted my boss for guidance, who advised me to speak directly with the chef. The chef took the time to explain AGS in detail, clarifying which menu items were safe for the guest to consume. With this new understanding, I returned to the guest, carefully guiding them through their dining options. I also ensured that the meal preparation adhered to strict safety measures to prevent any cross-contamination.

The guest was deeply appreciative of the personalized attention and care, expressing gratitude in their feedback. This experience not only strengthened my ability to handle unique challenges but also contributed to me being recognized as Server of the Month. The acknowledgment reaffirmed my commitment to providing exceptional service and underscored the value of teamwork in delivering a safe and enjoyable experience for every guest.
